About this resource
Historical Shared String Manager 1.4 by Melvin Smith (Fusion), providing shared-string allocation and integration notes for Merc/Envy-derived games. Package contents Contains ssm.c, README, HOWTO and ftp_game.org mirror information. This historical revision retains the shared-heap and boot-time hashing design. The separately attached original 00index.txt describes the four-release series. Credits Melvin Smith (Fusion), Shared String Manager and Merc/Envy adaptation from MUD++. Jason Dinkel requested the OLC integration. Preserve all original names and headers. The source explicitly credits code copied from Furey for the Merc port. License warning The 1.4 source says there is no copyright but names and headers should be preserved. It also acknowledges code copied from Furey for the Merc port. Preserve this notice and all applicable inherited terms; do not interpret it as clearing every third-party contribution or earlier version. The unchanged 00index.txt is the series index covering 1.0, 1.1, 1.3 and 1.4; it is a companion, not a blanket replacement license. Compatibility and security warnings Historical Merc/Envy string-heap replacement, not a standalone game server. Changes to str_dup, free_string and fread_string must be integrated consistently. Mixing allocation/freeing conventions or platform assumptions can corrupt memory or crash the server. Back up the code and world data and test on an isolated development copy. Mudhaven has not compiled, run, or security-audited this package; modern compiler and operating-system compatibility is unverified. Historical contact addresses may no longer work. Archive integrity does not establish software safety or distribution permission.
Compatibility
Historical Merc and Envy string handling; manual integration required. Modern compatibility unverified.
