About this resource
Historical Shared String Manager 1.1 by Melvin Smith (Fusion), providing shared-string allocation and integration notes for Merc/Envy-derived games. Package contents Contains ssm.c, db.c, save.c, README and change documentation. The README describes stock Envy 1.0 integration and Jason Dinkel's NeXT port; its internal archive-version reference is preserved as originally written. The replacement db.c/save.c are not safe drop-ins for arbitrary modified codebases. Credits Melvin Smith (Fusion), Shared String Manager and Merc/Envy adaptation from MUD++. Jason Dinkel requested the OLC integration. Preserve all original names and headers. Jason Dinkel provided the NeXT port. Included Diku code credits Sebastian Hammer, Michael Seifert, Hans Henrik Staerfeldt, Tom Madsen and Katja Nyboe. Merc credits Michael Chastain, Michael Quan and Mitchell Tse. Envy credits Michael Quan, David Love, Guilherme (Willie) Arnold and Mitchell Tse. License warning The included ssm.c bears a 1995 Melvin Smith copyright notice. No blanket redistribution grant has been established for this exact release. Preserve its own notices and applicable Merc/Envy/Diku terms. Do not substitute the different wording in the later 1.4 release or series index for this version's notices. The bundled db.c and save.c specifically require compliance with the Diku license (license.doc), Merc license (license.txt) and Envy license (license.nvy), retaining their copyright notices. Those references must not be mistaken for an unrestricted-use grant. Compatibility and security warnings Historical Merc/Envy string-heap replacement, not a standalone game server. Changes to str_dup, free_string and fread_string must be integrated consistently. Mixing allocation/freeing conventions or platform assumptions can corrupt memory or crash the server. Back up the code and world data and test on an isolated development copy. Mudhaven has not compiled, run, or security-audited this package; modern compiler and operating-system compatibility is unverified. Historical contact addresses may no longer work. Archive integrity does not establish software safety or distribution permission.
Compatibility
Historical Merc and Envy string handling; manual integration required. Modern compatibility unverified.
A download checksum confirms file integrity, not security or runtime compatibility. Review the source and included documentation before running unfamiliar software.
Attribution stays with the work.
License
Historical SSM copyright and inherited notices; permission review required
