Distortions of Chaos - Historical RoT-Derived Codebase
Historical Distortions of Chaos C source, world data and documentation derived from RoT and ROM, with original notices and Macintosh packaging metadata.
About this resource
Original DoC.zip containing the DoC source tree, world data, configuration and documentation. This distribution includes .DS_Store and __MACOSX AppleDouble metadata, retained unchanged. It is a distinct historical snapshot from the Yampmud package, not a verified upgrade path. Credits Carl F. Otto III (Distortions): most DoC changes. Special thanks to Justin Thomas (Samoth) and Nicole Sativa Kurlish (Khaos). Preserve the DikuMUD, Merc, ROM, RoT, DRM, source, area and individual contributor credits. License warning Preserve doc/DoC.license, DRM.license, license.doc, license.txt, rom.license, rot.license, rom.credits and all README documents. These layered terms include inherited noncommercial restrictions, source and area attribution, login-screen and help credits, applicable notification requirements, and identification as both a RoT 1.4 and DoC derivative in MUD listings. The DoC license refers to rot.txt while the included document is named rot.license; this historical discrepancy is retained. Archive availability does not itself establish that all redistribution conditions have been satisfied. Historical contact addresses may no longer work. Compatibility and safety warnings The README describes C source optimized and cleaned up for GCC 3.1, with default port 7200 configured in src/start-doc. DoC describes this as an alpha public release that may contain bugs, with no promised updates or support. Older inherited Merc build instructions may not apply to this snapshot. Modern compiler and operating-system compatibility are unverified. Neither package was compiled, boot-tested, malware-certified or comprehensively security-audited. Review startup scripts and historical configuration/state text before use; do not execute them blindly. No compiled ELF/MZ programs or nonempty player-save, board or log files were identified in this inspection, but that is not a safety guarantee.
Compatibility
Historical RoT/ROM-derived C source; README targets GCC 3.1. Modern Unix/Linux toolchain compatibility unverified.
A download checksum confirms file integrity, not security or runtime compatibility. Review the source and included documentation before running unfamiliar software.
Attribution stays with the work.
License
DoC and inherited DikuMUD/Merc/ROM/RoT/DRM terms; component notices
